Buddycare is provided by buddies. A buddy is a highly motivated volunteer who offers emotional and practical support to people with HIV, AIDS or any other chronic or life-threatening illness.

A buddy can best be described as a companion or ‘pal’.

The Netherlands has an extensive network of professional institutions providing health care and services. The task of a buddy is to supplement the work of professional carers; they do not assume the role of these carers. Many buddies do this voluntary work in addition to their day job, studies or busy family lives.

The support offered by buddies is also supplementary to the support provided in many cases by partners, family and friends of the client, many of whom do a great deal. The buddy cannot and may not be a substitute for this care. However the fact that a buddy is an “outsider” who has a special relationship with the client may make it easier for the client to discuss matters which he/she would rather not worry others with.
